I've wanted to try out the Jinhao 159 pen for a while now. I've heard good things about it in various online communities and on YouTube. It cost $8 with Amazon Prime. I went with the medium sized nib because I didn't have that size in my collection. What really sold the pen was that it comes with a converter so you can use whatever ink you have to fill it. I have a large bottle of Diamine "Ancient Copper" that I filled it with.

Size Comparison : lafinduglobe

The only con I can think of is that this pen is LARGE. While I personally don't mind, I can see how some people might not like it. Sometimes I enjoy a hefty pen and enjoy feeling the weight of it as I write.

I had purchased this pen with the idea of using it in my Midori Traveler's Notebook along with my Lamy Safari. I enjoy using two different line widths in my notes. By the way, look at how my Midori is aging! It's getting very scuffed up.

Writing Comparison : lafinduglobe

The above shows a writing comparison of the three fountain pens that I now own. I have nothing but good things to say about the Jinhao because it writes so smoothly and wrote perfectly from the start. I am able to see more shading/color variation within my letters and it's pretty when it dries. Diamine's "Ancient Copper" isn't the best for shading but there is some light and dark visible within each letter.

I really do think this is a great pen for a beginner, and I still consider myself a fountain pen newbie. You can't beat the price or the fact that it comes with a converter--most pens offer a converter for an extra fee!

I'm three fountain pens in and I think I can officially say that I love the writing experience they provide. I'm sure my collection will steadily grow over time and I can't wait to get some new inks!
