"I wish it were fin du globe," said Dorian with a sigh. "Life is a great disappointment."

An Ode and Goodbye to Surly Girl Saloon.

If you know me in person or have been following my online presence since 2006, then you probably know that I often went to Surly Girl Saloon. For a while I was living a block away from it. Brunches and lunches and dinners and drinks and even holidays were spent at Surly Girl. They had a Thanksgiving dinner plate that Ryan and I got for a few years--it was a great place to avoid the holiday but get my stuffing fix.

Ryan and I had our first 'date' there. I brought friends from out of town there. My friend Kristyn and I always caught up on life there. Once I spent six consecutive hours drinking there (and then wondered where the time went!) I had hangover Bloody Marys and sausage gravy slathered breakfast burritos there.

And now, they're closed. I know I can find a new spot but it is sad. Surly Girl holds sentimental value to me and I'm sure it does for countless others in Columbus. It had that rare quality of being a super busy establishment but once you were seated, everything melted away and you were able to just enjoy the moment and who you were sitting with. Service was friendly, the food was consistent, the Bloody Marys outstanding, the cupcakes delicious and the Surly Temples very much heavy on the vodka.

What did I have for my last meal? I went with their grilled cheese and creamy tomato soup. I had a water and two Surly Temples and we each got a red velvet cupcake.

I really have no idea what they will do with the space, and I have no idea what business will move in next. We'll see.
